Online Communion
Normally, the communion is prepared at the church and shared with the assembled congregation. Since we are no longer physically assembling, each household will need to provide the emblems that they will partake. This will require some preparation on your part. Here are the guidelines for you to follow in the days prior to the service as well as on Sunday morning.
Preparation
- Thursday or Friday: Discuss and plan the process
- Saturday: Identify and clear the location for the bread and wine
- Sunday: Prepare and place the emblems in the identified location
The Emblems
- Bread placed on a plate or napkin
- Grape juice in separate glasses for each person. If grape juice is not available, replace with a different juice or water
Kneeling
- Make sure there is room available to kneel
- If fully kneeling is not physically possible, take an act similar to kneeling such as leaning forward, bowing, or taking a prayerful attitude
Serving
- If you are alone during the service, you will simply serve yourself during the sacrament
- If you are in a family together for the service, each person will get up one at a time and serve themselves
- If you are in a family and one of you is a Priest or member of the Melchisedec priesthood, that person can serve the entire family, much like we are accustomed to doing when we are at church in person
Mental and Spiritual Preparation
“All are welcome at Christ’s table. The Lord’s Supper, or communion, is a sacrament in which we remember the life, death, resurrection, and continuing presence of Jesus Christ. In Community Of Christ, we also experience communion as an opportunity to renew our baptismal covenant and to be formed as disciples who live Christ’s Mission. Others may have different or added understandings within their faith traditions. We invite all who participate in the Lord’s Supper to do so in the love and peace of Jesus Christ.”
